SMOF News, volume 1, issue 53
Ekpeki gets his visa, Fan Expo looks ahead, reflections at the one-year mark, and news in brief.
Numbering Note
SMOF News will begin a new volume on the first Wednesday of September every year. It just happens that I picked a year to start with that had 53 Wednesdays.
International Incident Averted
As reported last week, Oghenechovwe Donald Ekpeki, a finalist in two Hugo Award categories, was denied a visa to enter the United States to attend the awards ceremony at the World Science Fiction Convention (Chicago, Illinois, September 1-5).
Ekpeki announced on Monday that he had been granted a new visa interview. This was followed by an ominous day of silence, until he added that he now had his visa and would be travelling to the US on Wednesday.
Fan Expo Is Bullish on the Future
Aman Gupta, the president and founder of Fan Expo, now the largest media-convention-running conglomerate in the world, was interviewed by Forbes on the state his company. Despite the changes wrought by the pandemic, Gupta sees nothing but growth ahead:
With new organizational heft and capital, Fan Expo built some of its shows into international destination events. “Our show in Orlando, MegaCon, surprised us this year with a huge turnout, over 140,000,” he said. The scale nearly overwhelmed the infrastructure in the Florida home of Disney World. They’re expecting big crowds in Toronto this weekend, although Gupta says there is still room to grow in the city and the venue.
Also:
The company is also looking overseas, with a “sister show” slated for Dubai.
It is also noted that even one of the world’s friendliest borders poses logistical headaches:
One issue for Fan Expo as an international company is navigating customs and border issues for events that feature a lot of exhibitors selling expensive items and celebrities running cash-based photo and autograph sales at the shows. Gupta says Fan Expo provides support for exhibitors to navigate the US-Canada regulations.
Reflections on One Year of SMOF News
I once read that only about 10% of fanzines make it as far as their tenth issue. I am proud to have taken SMOF News to over five times that and I hope to keep it going for some years to come.
Not every moment has been proud. Just last week, sharp-eyed reader Kevin Standlee pointed out that despite the repeated mentions of Worldcon here, I had not actually added this year’s Worldcon to the listings when its weekend rotated in. It has been restored to its rightful place this week, and my hope now is that that remains my most embarrassing mistake for some while.
The big convention story of the last year, as it has been in nearly everything since 2020, is the pandemic. As I started this newsletter, conventions which had rescheduled to later in the year to take advantage of receding infections were instead being swamped by the Delta wave. Anime NYC initially looked like a return to normality in November— “Large North American anime con has registration line meltdown” was a routine news story through much of the 2010s— but instead it heralded the arrival of our new friend Omicron. We may be dealing with this pandemic for a good long time, but I still hold out hope for writing it about it less in the coming year as convention policies and international travel regulations converge toward some new generally accepted norm.
Thank you to all my subscribers, whether you subscribed right at the start or just last week. I hope this little newsletter has been of some value to you, and that it will continue to be.
In Brief
F-Con, the 53rd Japanese national science fiction convention, announced the results of the fan-voted Seiun Awards during the con last weekend.
The Ohio Valley Filk Festival (October 28-30, Worthington, Ohio, USA) has opened up voting for the 2022 Pegasus Awards. Voters do not need to be members of the convention, but do need to be active in the filk community.
SNAFU Con, an anime convention typically held in September or October, is skipping 2022 and has announced a “filler arc” of mini-events to tide local fans over until 2023.
Lumi-Con, an anime convention which was to have been held in late October, has cancelled its 2022 event and plans to hold no more.
