A Comic-Con hotel faces a strike, and news in brief.
San Diego Comic-Con Hotel Staff on Strike
Workers at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, which hosts some programming for Comic-Con International this weekend as well as being the place where many attendees are staying, began a strike today. The hotel has promised minimal disruption, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune:
In an emailed statement from Hilton Wednesday, the hotel said “we are continuing to welcome guests and have contingency plans in place to ensure operations run as smoothly as possible.”
Those plans allegedly include strikebreakers:
[Unite Here President Brigette] Browning said she believes that the hotel is currently being staffed by temporary workers and a few employees from the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines, which is not unionized.
At issue are both overall pay and changes in room-cleaning policies which have reduced housekeepers’ hours significantly.
Speaking to Forbes, SDCC’s Chief Communication and Strategy Officer David Glanzer offered this statement:
“Staff at this hotel and so many others, have always gone the extra mile in taking good care of us and our visitors to Comic-Con. We hope a resolution will be reached that will be satisfactory to all stakeholders.”

Anime Expo has announced the launch of a smaller sister event, “anime expo” (Ontario, California, USA, November 12-13).
Chicon 8, the 80th World Science Fiction Convention (Chicago, Illinois, USA, September 1-5) has posted a first draft of the WSFS Business Meeting agenda (PDF). 7 rules changes are being proposed, all of which are Hugo-related.
