More good news for Westercon, and news in brief.
Westercon is Back on Track
Last week’s issue said about the 2024 Westercon:
The deadline for official bids was April 15, but a write-in bid could be announced any time up until Westercon 74. If none appears, the decision about how to proceed goes to the Los Angeles Science Fiction Society, which ultimately owns Westercon.
In fact, a step was skipped there, as Kevin Standlee, the chair of Westercon 74, clarifies:
If no bid had appeared (or if the election returns no winner for any other reason), the decision about where Westercon 76 goes is first up to the Westercon Business Meeting, which can pick a committee with all rules suspended other than having to be somewhere in North America west of 104° W or in Hawaii. It's only if the Business Meeting can't reach a decision that LASFS has to take charge of it. This is specified in Section 3.16 of the Westercon Bylaws.
But as Standlee’s wording suggests, a bid for Westercon 76 has emerged in the past week. The bid is for July 4-7, 2024, in Salt Lake City, per this announcement at westercon.org. Site selection voters would need to have joined Westercon 74 as of June 25, but voting will continue through July 2 at Westercon itself for those attending in person.
This means that Westercon is back on its regular cycle for now, with the site of Westercon 77 to be selected next year at Westercon 75 in Anaheim.
In Brief
The 2022 SciFi/Fantasy Fest (Hoover, Alabama, USA, intended dates unclear) has been cancelled due to staffing changes. The Hoover Sun reports it may return next year.
WisCon 46 (Madison, Wisconsin, USA, May 26-29, 2023) has announced Rivers Solomon and Martha Wells as its Guests of Honor. Nominations are being taken for WisCon 47’s guests at gohnoms@wiscon.net.
Gen Con (Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, August 4-7) has added R. A. Salvatore as its Author Guest of Honor.
