Anime NYC Was Not a Superspreader Event
Not one but two studies of COVID-19 in Anime NYC attendees were released by the CDC last week, and both suggest that common precautions against transmission work, even for large cons.
“Investigation of SARS-CoV-2 Transmission Associated With a Large Indoor Convention — New York City, November–December 2021” looks at the attendees as a whole and finds that infection rates were not significantly different from the rate in New York City at the time:
Despite these potential exposures and multiple introductions as evidenced by genomic identification of at least three different SARS-CoV-2 variants and sublineages, findings from surveillance and survey data from a portion of attendees suggest that this large event did not lead to widespread transmission; 7-day average percentage of positive test results in NYC on December 5, 2021, (3.0%) was similar to that in this investigation (2.6%).
As for what did turn out to be risky:
Test-positive survey respondents reported engaging in certain activities more frequently than did test-negative respondents, including attending bars (16.7% versus 6.9%), karaoke (18.8% versus 2.4%), or nightclubs (10.4% versus 3.0%) outside of the convention, and eating or drinking indoors near others for at least 15 minutes at the convention (62.5% versus 43.7%) (all p<0.05).
“Multistate Outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1.529 (Omicron) Variant Infections Among Persons in a Social Network Attending a Convention — New York City, November 18–December 20, 2021” takes a look at Peter McGinn (“Patient A”) and his close contacts. 29 people were identified that McGinn had spent significant unmasked time around; 23 were interviewed for the study, and 16 of those tested positive.
Both studies suggest that masking, vaccination requirements, and good ventilation are a strong defense against COVID-19, even when you have 53,000 people packed into one convention center. They also remind us that no virus is going to politely step aside when you take your mask off to eat or hang out with your friends.
Anime NYC is only identified as “a large indoor convention” in both studies, so sadly there are no scientific descriptions of anime to enjoy. However, here is very serious educational publication Science News running a photo of anime fans in costume.
Science News interviewed a local epidemiologist who thinks that Anime NYC just got lucky:
Additionally, Anime NYC had “a fortunate coincidence” in its timing, says Ayman El-Mohandes, an epidemiologist and dean of the public health school at the City University of New York. Omicron was first identified in New York City wastewater samples on November 21, the final day of the convention — placing this event at the very beginning of the city’s outbreak, when community transmission was low.
“Had this same event happened two weeks later, it would’ve been disastrous,” El-Mohandes says.
